Born on June 7, 2001, in Buffalo, New York, Oren Forgette has led a life marked by dedication, curiosity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Growing up, Oren displayed an early interest in science and technology, shaping his educational and professional endeavors.

Foundation in Education

Oren’s academic journey began at City Honors High School in Buffalo, where he was an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate and achieved his NY Regents Diploma in June 2019. His time in high school was not just about academics; he was also a co-captain of the rowing team and competed at nationals. This balance of academic rigor and athletic commitment set the stage for his future endeavors.

College Years at SUNY Geneseo

After high school, Oren pursued higher education at SUNY Geneseo in Geneseo, NY. He is working towards a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics with a minor in Mathematics and is expected to graduate in May 2024. Maintaining a GPA of 3.0, Oren has excelled in a challenging academic environment.

Notable Research and Technical Experience

NASA NY Space Grant

During the summer of 2023, Oren participated in the NASA NY Space Grant at SUNY Geneseo under the guidance of Dr. Pellerin. He created RGB images of nearby galaxies by applying F438W, F555W, and F606W filters to Hubble Space Telescope images. This project aimed to find Hα and OIII emission spectra, confirming the existence of planetary nebulae. His work contributed to our understanding of these celestial phenomena.

Labview- IMAQ Vision and Motion Project

In the fall of 2023, Oren designed, created and debugged a complex system of instruments using Labview. This project involved programming a computer to use the RS232 protocol to control two-stepping motors. One motor allowed a person to control a toy car. At the same time, the other automatically moved a live stream camera to follow the vehicle, ensuring it always remained in the center frame. This innovative project showcased Oren’s technical skills and problem-solving abilities.

Coding Skills and Technical Proficiency

Oren’s technical prowess extends beyond his projects. He is experienced with standard protocols for instrument interfacing, including RS232-Serial, DAQ, GPIB, and USB. His coding skills are impressive, with proficiency in Python for simulating physical systems modeled by non-linear differential equations, Mathematica for numerical analysis, and Excel for creating plots and deriving meaningful statistics from large data sets.

Extracurricular Activities and Leadership Roles

Eagle Scout and Senior Patrol Leader

Oren’s leadership qualities were evident early on. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and served as the Senior Patrol Leader for Troop 5 in Buffalo. One of his notable projects as an Eagle Scout was the Deer Enclosure at Reinstein Woods, showcasing his commitment to community service and environmental conservation.

Sports Chair at Zeta Beta Xi Fraternity

At SUNY Geneseo, Oren is actively involved in campus life. As the Sports Chair of Zeta Beta Xi Fraternity, he organized league play for various intramural sports, fostering camaraderie and teamwork among fraternity members.

Professional Experience and Work Ethic

Oren’s work experience is as diverse as his academic pursuits. He has worked at the Cheesy Chick Cafe & Food Trucks in Williamsville, NY, where he served customers, prepped food, cooked, and ran the cash register. Additionally, he was a Dasher for DoorDash in Buffalo, delivering take-out orders from restaurants.

Camp Counselor and Ski Coach

His leadership skills were further honed during his summers as a camp counselor at Camp Pathfinder in Algonquin Park, ON, Canada. Here, he led campers on multi-day canoe trips, accumulating over 1,000 km of canoeing experience. In the winters, he coached children in downhill skiing fundamentals at the Buffalo Ski Center, sharing his passion for the sport with young learners.
